As a well-regarded prerequisite for entry into university study, our IB Diploma Programme is a rigorous two-year programme for grades 11 and 12. Through six subject groups, students develop their knowledge in a range of areas, including languages, the arts, and sciences to encourage a breadth of knowledge and experiences.
Students elect to learn some subjects at a higher level with increased teaching hours, and some subjects at a standard level. This is unique to the IB programme, and it enables students to work across a number of disciplines, and to make connections between what they study and the world around them. In addition to their six subject areas, students also work on the IB Diploma’s three unique elements, which are the theory of knowledge, the extended essay and the creativity, action and service programme.
The theory of knowledge course asks students to examine knowledge itself. It is a philosophical subject designed for students to ask questions, to look deeply at how knowledge is constructed and to think critically about bias in knowledge both personally and culturally.
The extended essay can be considered a mini thesis in which the student explores an area of interest within their subject groups, or as an interdisciplinary inquiry across two study areas in a topic of global significance. This essay enables students to further their research skills as well as reflect on their topic during a series of interviews with a supervisor.
Though not formally assessed, the creativity, action and service program is designed for personal development for IB Diploma students. Through a self-guided project, students must use problem solving techniques, communication and decision-making in an experiential journey interweaving the arts, physical activity, and volunteering.
